Frequently Asked Questions
-
The library is for two primary audiences: writers, and directors selecting scripts for production.
This is a library for writers because writers must also be readers. When we have access to contemporary plays, we can begin to understand what the stage is capable of, and not look at other writers as “competition,” but as collaborators. All of us are working on the same craft in our own unique voice, and more reading begets better writing, always.
For directors, accessing contemporary plays is extremely challenging. While there are invaluable online resources, they put the burden of reseach entirely on the person seeking the script. The LPL will be a thoughtful, curated collection of contemporary work, organized and cross-referenced by genre, cast size, and length. A local director or actor will be able to look up the kind of piece they need and borrow what they want to consider. -
When the Living Playwrights Library has a permanent location, hours and location will be listed so you can come and peruse the library at your leisure. There will be a simple sign out sheet for you to borrow a script, including your contact information so we can follow up if the script has been out for too long.
-

-

-
No. The Living Playwrights Library only accepts new copies of published plays written after 1990. This is for several reasons:
- It’s already fairly easy to locate pre-1990 scripts online and for purchase.
- Classical plays, while much respected and beloved, are even easier to find, and are not aligned to the mission of this library resource.
- Only local playwrights may submit unpublished manuscripts, as the LPL is different than resources like the New Play Exchange, which provide a vast, searchable platform for both published and unpublished work. LPL is more curated, bespoke, and specific. -
